All five of the surviving rhinoceros species are found in Africa and Asia. Four of these species are considered “Critically Endangered” by researchers. The black rhino is the most well-known and widespread of the five species, it is nevertheless in a vulnerable position. Scientists and conservationists are working to rebuild black rhino populations in places like Rwanda. Since scientists determined that the Western black rhino subspecies was extinct, there are now just three subspecies left.īlack rhinos have dark skin, lips that are in the shape of a triangle, and small bumps on their shoulders. They are the first species with two horns. The white rhino and the Sumatran rhino are the other two. Of the 5 types of rhinoceros, the white rhino is the largest. Its skin looks more grey in color than white, despite its name. It needs a large hump on its shoulders to hold its head because it is so large. It can easily graze grass because of its wide, square lip. There are two distinct subspecies of white rhinos-the northern and southern versions. Sumatran Rhino ( Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) Northern white rhinos are effectively extinct. The Sumatran rhino is the smallest one among all of the 5 species. Interestingly, it is the only one that has fur. Researchers have determined that the Sumatran rhino is the closest living relative of the extinct Woolly rhino. In comparison to other Asian rhinos, this one stands out due to its two horns. There might only be as few as 30 left in the wild. Javan Rhino ( Rhinoceros sondaicus)Īs far as we know, the Javan rhino is the only rhino species with just one horn. There are some females who do not have horns.
